Priorities

After reviewing our budget, savings, investments, we realized that we are we are not millionaires. Shocking...I know.

Not that this is a huge revelation...we decided awhile ago that I would stay home when the baby came and thus that we would need to save save save and that finances would be a little tighter.

But seeing how tight they would be getting, made it all the more obvious that we cannot afford all the adorable things I had planned for our little guys nursery. And I have been pouting about it.

I know that our baby will have a normal, healthy development without the adorable bedding and wall art from Pottery Barn (which is on sale...)

But I'm having a hard time...my dreams of nesting are fading slightly.

And then I found this quote from another friends blog and it's helping me put things in perspective.

"I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails.
I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbors children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived."

Marjorie Pay Hinckley

So while I am still resolving my pottery barn nesting urges and trying to find alternatives, I agree with what Sister Hinckley says. And I'm trying to grow up and realign my priorities.

  1. Hey Julia... I've been silently stalking your blog but as a fellow pottery barn kids fan I thought I'd finally speak up. I was desperate to have the Sophia bedding for Joselyn when she was born (my 2 year old) and searched for some good deals. Have you tried e-bay? Sometimes you can find REALLY cute barely used PB bedding (or sometimes new discontinued lines.) Also, Target has some darling crib bedding for boys online that is inexpensive too, believe it or not! Just a thought :) You are so cute pregnant! I can't wait to see pics of your little boy. And since I am stalking you feel free to stalk me- http://www.missnoeitall.typepad.com

  2. Julia... I am another blog stalker. Bret and I are loving San Angelo, but we REALLY miss having neighbors who we can call on a whim to come watch the game or who bring flashlights out to the moving van and then show up an hour later with goodies for the drive (we devoured them, by the way!). I keep telling Bret that maybe we could convince you guys to move out here... great place to raise a baby! Anyway, I have no idea if you're a sewer (sew-er), but I was just thinking what a cute bedding set you could sew pretty simply. They have such cute fabrics in quilting stores that you hardly have to do anything fancy. Just a thought, especially if you need a project while your at home with your little guy. Miss you guys!
